From Guessing to Knowing: A Farmer’s Journey#

Two Farmers, Two Approaches, Two Very Different Outcomes#

Meet Ramu and Selvam — two neighboring farmers in Tamil Nadu, both growing tomatoes on similar 2-acre plots. Same soil, same weather, same market. But at the end of the year, their stories are very different.

Ramu’s Story (Without Tracking)#

Ramu has been farming for 15 years. He’s experienced, hardworking, and knows his land well. Like most farmers, he keeps everything in his head.

The Tomato Season#

Ramu plants tomatoes in June. Throughout the season:

  • He buys seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides — paying cash, sometimes on credit
  • He hires laborers for weeding, spraying, and harvesting
  • He rents a tractor for tilling
  • He sells his harvest to different buyers at the market

End of Season#

When someone asks Ramu, “How much profit did you make?”

He pauses. “I think I did okay… the prices were good this time.”

But he can’t answer:

  • How much did he actually spend? He remembers the big expenses but forgot the small ones — the ₹500 here, ₹300 there. They add up.
  • Which buyer paid better? He sold to whoever was available. No records.
  • Why was last year’s yield lower? He can’t remember what he did differently.
  • Which field performed better? Both felt similar, but he’s not sure.

The Hidden Problem#

Ramu feels like he made a profit because he received money when he sold. But he never calculated:

  • Total seeds, fertilizers, pesticides: ₹45,000
  • Labor costs across the season: ₹28,000
  • Tractor rental and fuel: ₹12,000
  • Transport to market: ₹5,000
  • Actual total expenses: ₹90,000

His total sales were ₹95,000. His actual profit? Just ₹5,000 for 4 months of work.

Worse, he doesn’t know why. Was it the fertilizer cost? Too much labor? Low yield? Bad prices? He has no data to analyze.

Year After Year#

Every season, Ramu repeats the same pattern:

  • No idea where money goes
  • Can’t compare what worked vs what didn’t
  • Makes the same mistakes
  • Blames weather or luck for bad years
  • Can’t prove income for bank loans

Selvam’s Story (With Pannai)#

Selvam farms the adjacent plot. Same experience, same crops. But two years ago, he started using Pannai.

The Tomato Season#

Selvam also plants tomatoes in June. But now:

  • Every expense goes into the app — seeds ₹8,000, DAP fertilizer ₹6,500, labor ₹2,000…
  • He photographs receipts and attaches them
  • He records which tractor he hired and links it to the expense
  • He notes observations: “Aphids spotted in north corner of Field 2”

During the Season#

  • He sets tasks: “Spray pesticide on Monday” with reminders
  • When he notices something, he adds a note: “Tried new organic fertilizer on Field 1”
  • He records each harvest: 450 kg on Day 1, 380 kg on Day 2…
  • When he sells, he records income with buyer details

End of Season#

When someone asks Selvam, “How much profit did you make?”

He opens his app and shows them:

Amount
Total Income₹1,15,000
Total Expenses₹72,000
Profit₹43,000

But More Importantly…#

Selvam can answer questions Ramu never could:

“Where did the money go?”

“Fertilizers were my biggest expense at ₹18,000. Labor was ₹22,000. I spent ₹8,000 on pesticides — more than last year because of the aphid problem in August.”

“Why was this year better than last year?”

“I compared my season reports. Last year I used 3 sprays of pesticide. This year I used 2 but applied them earlier when I first spotted aphids. I noted that in the app. Saved ₹4,000 and had less crop damage.”

“Which field performed better?”

“Field 1 gave 2,800 kg. Field 2 gave 2,200 kg. But Field 2 had the aphid problem. My notes show I should rotate crops there next season.”

“Which buyer should you sell to?”

“Murugan from the Tuesday market paid ₹18/kg on average. The roadside buyer only paid ₹15/kg. I have it all recorded. Now I always go to Murugan first.”

“What fertilizer worked best?”

“I tried organic fertilizer on Field 1 this year — noted it in the app. Yield was 15% higher than Field 2 with chemical fertilizer. The extra cost was worth it.”

The Difference#

Ramu (No Tracking)Selvam (With Pannai)
Knows actual profit❌ Guesses✅ Exact numbers
Tracks all expenses❌ Forgets small ones✅ Every rupee recorded
Compares seasons❌ Relies on memory✅ Season-by-season reports
Learns from mistakes❌ Repeats them✅ Notes what worked
Identifies best buyers❌ Sells to anyone✅ Knows who pays more
Plans improvements❌ Same approach yearly✅ Data-driven decisions
Gets bank loans❌ No proof of income✅ Shows reports
Tracks field performance❌ Everything feels same✅ Per-field analysis

Two Years Later#

Ramu is still farming the same way. Some years feel good, some don’t. He can’t explain why. When crop prices fell last year, he had no buffer — he didn’t realize his expenses had crept up 20% over two years.

Selvam has transformed his farm:

  • He identified that Field 2 consistently underperforms — soil test (noted in app) showed it needs lime treatment
  • He found that Murugan is his best buyer and now has a standing arrangement
  • He reduced pesticide costs by 30% by spraying at the right time based on his notes from previous seasons
  • His bank approved a loan because he showed 2 years of income reports from the app
  • He knows his cost per kg of tomatoes is ₹14, so he never sells below ₹16

The Real Value#

Pannai doesn’t farm for you. Selvam still wakes up at 5 AM, still works under the sun, still worries about rain.

But now he understands his farm:

  • Where every rupee goes
  • What worked and what didn’t
  • Which decisions made money and which lost it
  • How to do better next season

Farming is hard. But farming blind is harder.

Ramu works hard but can’t see. Selvam works hard and sees clearly.

Start Your Story#

Every entry you make today is data you’ll thank yourself for tomorrow.

  • That ₹500 expense you record now? It helps you calculate true profit later.
  • That note about pest sighting? It reminds you to spray earlier next year.
  • That yield record? It shows which field needs attention.

The best time to start tracking was years ago. The second best time is today.
